Upcoming Asylum Hearing Date - 12/4/25 - CANCELLED
Please check back closer to the date for additional information as this page is updated.
UPDATE: This hearing has been cancelled as of Friday, 11/21/25. Stay tuned for further information. Originally, the hearing had been scheduled for Thursday, December 4th, 2025, at 8:30 AM, at the Green-Wyatt Federal Building in downtown Portland. A morning rally had been planned across the street from the Federal Building, and then a gathering for unity and prayer at Augustana Lutheran Church in the late afternoon. These plans are, of course, now on hold… The “Rally” and “Gathering” sections below will be updated as more information becomes available.
Rally for Francisco on the Hearing Date... Stay Tuned
This section will be updated as more information becomes avaliable: There will be a peaceful rally for Francisco, from 7:15 to 9:30 on the morning of the hearing, at Terry Schrunk Plaza, across the street from the Federal Building. Francisco will be arriving by 7:30 and we would love to see a big crowd there to greet him before he heads into the building at 8:00! There will be notable local speakers, storytelling, and singing led by renowned jazz and gospel singer Marilyn Keller. We want to show the world the depth of our support for Francisco! It should be noted that the courtroom is very small, so that attendance at the hearing will be reserved for Francisco’s closest associates. But we need lots of people to attend the rally! Dress warmly, bring a hot drink, snacks will be provided. Please review Martin Luther King’s Six Principles of Nonviolence below!
Gather for Unity and Prayer at Augustana on the Hearing Date... Stay Tuned
This section will be updated as more information becomes available. We will gather together again for unity and prayer at 5:00 PM, on the day of the hearing, at Augustana Lutheran Church in Portland, where Francisco sought sanctuary in 2014, and where he now leads the Sunday Spanish service.
Martin Luther King's Six Principles of Nonviolence
As a spiritual leader, as a community educator and organizer, Francisco has always adhered to Martin Luther King’s Six Principles of Non-Violence. We want the rally, and our support for Francisco, to reflect these principles:
- One: Nonviolence is a way of life for courageous people. It is active nonviolent resistance to evil. It is aggressive spiritually, mentally and emotionally.
- Two: Nonviolence seeks to win friendship and understanding. The result of nonviolence is redemption and reconciliation. The purpose of nonviolence is the creation of the Beloved Community.
- Three: Nonviolence seeks to defeat injustice, not people. Nonviolence recognises that evildoers are also victims and are not evil people. The nonviolent resister seeks to defeat evil, not people.
- Four: Nonviolence holds that suffering can educate and transform. Nonviolence accepts suffering without retaliation. Unearned suffering is redemptive and has tremendous educational and transforming possibilities.
- Five: Nonviolence chooses love instead of hate. Nonviolence resists violence of the spirit as well as the body. Nonviolent love is spontaneous, unmotivated, unselfish and creative.
- Six: Nonviolence believes that the universe is on the side of justice. The nonviolent resister has deep faith that justice will eventually win. Nonviolence believes that God is a God of justice.
Songs for the Rally!
I’d hammer out the evening,
I’d hammer out danger,
I’d hammer out love between
I’d ring it in the evening,
I’d ring out danger,
I’d ring out love between
I’d sing it in the evening,
I’d sing out danger,
I’d sing out love between
And I got a song to sing,
It’s the hammer of justice,
It’s a song about love between
From the Redwood Forest,
for lands afar and mine
This is my home,
The country where my heart is;
Here are my hopes,
My dreams, my holy shrine;
But other hearts
In other lands are beating
As true and high as mine.
Are bluer than the ocean,
And sunlight beams
On cloverleaf and pine.
Both other lands
Have sunlight too, and clover,
And skies are ev’rywhere
As blue as mine.
So hear my song,
O God of all the nations,
A song of peace,
For their land and for mine.
