RALLY FOR FRANCISCO!

Upcoming Asylum Hearing Date - 12/4/25 - CANCELLED

Please check back closer to the date for additional information as this page is updated.

UPDATE: This hearing has been cancelled as of Friday, 11/21/25.  Stay tuned for further information.  Originally, the hearing had been scheduled for Thursday, December 4th, 2025, at 8:30 AM, at the Green-Wyatt Federal Building in downtown Portland.  A morning rally had been planned across the street from the Federal Building, and then a gathering for unity and prayer at Augustana Lutheran Church in the late afternoon.  These plans are, of course, now on hold…  The “Rally” and “Gathering” sections below will be updated as more information becomes available.

Rally for Francisco on the Hearing Date... Stay Tuned

This section will be updated as more information becomes avaliable:   There will be a peaceful rally for Francisco, from 7:15 to 9:30 on the morning of the hearing, at Terry Schrunk Plaza, across the street from the Federal Building.  Francisco will be arriving by 7:30 and we would love to see a big crowd there to greet him before he heads into the building at 8:00!  There will be notable local speakers, storytelling, and singing led by renowned jazz and gospel singer Marilyn Keller.  We want to show the world the depth of our support for Francisco!  It should be noted that the courtroom is very small, so that attendance at the hearing will be reserved for Francisco’s closest associates.  But we need lots of people to attend the rally!  Dress warmly, bring a hot drink, snacks will be provided.  Please review Martin Luther King’s Six Principles of Nonviolence below!

Gather for Unity and Prayer at Augustana on the Hearing Date... Stay Tuned

This section will be updated as more information becomes available.  We will gather together again for unity and prayer at 5:00 PM, on the day of the hearing, at Augustana Lutheran Church in Portland, where Francisco sought sanctuary in 2014, and where he now leads the Sunday Spanish service.

Martin Luther King's Six Principles of Nonviolence

As a spiritual leader, as a community educator and organizer, Francisco has always adhered to Martin Luther King’s Six Principles of Non-Violence.  We want the rally, and our support for Francisco, to reflect these principles:

  • One: Nonviolence is a way of life for courageous people. It is active nonviolent resistance to evil. It is aggressive spiritually, mentally and emotionally.
  • Two: Nonviolence seeks to win friendship and understanding. The result of nonviolence is redemption and reconciliation. The purpose of nonviolence is the creation of the Beloved Community.
  • Three: Nonviolence seeks to defeat injustice, not people. Nonviolence recognises that evildoers are also victims and are not evil people. The nonviolent resister seeks to defeat evil, not people.
  • Four: Nonviolence holds that suffering can educate and transform. Nonviolence accepts suffering without retaliation. Unearned suffering is redemptive and has tremendous educational and transforming possibilities.
  • Five: Nonviolence chooses love instead of hate. Nonviolence resists violence of the spirit as well as the body. Nonviolent love is spontaneous, unmotivated, unselfish and creative.
  • Six: Nonviolence believes that the universe is on the side of justice. The nonviolent resister has deep faith that justice will eventually win. Nonviolence believes that God is a God of justice.

Songs for the Rally!

If I had a hammer,
I’d hammer out the morning,I’d hammer out the evening,
all over this land,I’d hammer out danger,
I’d hammer out a warning,I’d hammer out love between
my brothers and my sisters
all over this land

If I had a bell,
I’d ring it in the morning,I’d ring it in the evening,
all over this land,I’d ring out danger,
I’d ring out a warning,I’d ring out love between
my brothers and my sisters
all over this land

If I had a song,
I’d sing it in the morning,I’d sing it in the evening,
all over this land,I’d sing out danger,
I’d sing out a warning,I’d sing out love between
my brothers and my sisters
all over this land

Well, I got a hammer,
And I got a bell,And I got a song to sing,
all over this land,It’s the hammer of justice,
It’s the bell of freedom,It’s a song about love between
my brothers and my sisters
all over this land

This land is your land,
This land is my land,
From California,
To the New York Island,From the Redwood Forest,
To the Gulf Stream Waters,
This land was made
for you and me

As I was walking
That ribbon of highway,
I saw above me
That endless skyway,
I saw below me,
That golden valley,
This land was made
for you and me…

I’ve roamed and I’ve rambled,
and I followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of
Her diamond deserts,
And all around me,
A voice was sounding:
This land was made
for you and me…

When the sun came shining,
And I was strolling,
And the wheat fields waving.
And the dust clouds rolling,
As the fog was lifting,
A voice was chanting:
This land was made
for you and me…

Nobody living,
Can ever stop me,
As I go walking,
That freedom highway,
Nobody living,
Can make me turn back,
This land was made
for you and me…
We shall overcome,
We shall overcome,
We shall overcome someday,
Deep in my heart, I do believe,
We shall overcome someday.

We’ll walk hand in hand,
We’ll walk hand in hand,
We’ll walk hand in hand someday,
Deep in my heart, I do believe,
We’ll walk hand in hand someday.

We shall live in peace,
We shall live in peace,
We shall live in peace someday,
Deep in my heart,
I do believe,
We shall live in peace someday.

We shall all be free,
We shall all be free,
We shall all be free someday,
Deep in my heart, I do believe,
We shall all be free someday.

We shall overcome,
We shall overcome,
We shall overcome someday,
Deep in my heart, I do believe,
We shall overcome someday.

We are not afraid,
We are not afraid,
We are not afraid today,
Deep in my heart, I do believe,
We are not afraid today.

We shall not,
We shall not be moved,
We shall not,
We shall not be moved,
Like a tree
That’s planted by the water,
We shall not be moved.

Fighting for our freedom,
We shall not be moved,
Fighting for our freedom,
We shall not be moved,
Like a tree
That’s planted by the water,
We shall not be moved.

Fighting for our children,
We shall not be moved,
Fighting for our children,
We shall not be moved,
Like a tree
That’s planted by the water,
We shall not be moved.

All of us together,
We shall not be moved,
All of us together,
We shall not be moved,
Like a tree
That’s planted by the water,
We shall not be moved.
O beautiful for spacious skies,
For amber waves of grain,
For purple mounain majesties
Above the fruited plain!
America, America,
God shed much grace on thee,
Ring sisterhood!
Ring brotherhood!
From sea to shining sea!

O beautiful thy nations first
From ancient times they thrive
Their strength and wisdom
shared with us,
So humankind survives
America, America,
Rise up to meet they dream
Of sisterhood!  Of brotherhood!
From sea to shining sea

O beautiful thy immigrants
Who hail from every land,
Their hope and hear and diligence
Like gifts from God’s own hand
America, America,
Thy grace shall yet remain
To greet the poor who reach thy shore
With open arms again

O beautiful thy working folk
Build cities, tilled thy soil
Proud Africans in bloody chains
The wealth built from their toil
America, America,
God mend thine every flaw
Confirm thy soul in self-control
Thy liberty in law

America, America,
God shed much grace on thee
So spread the love sent from above
From sea to shining sea
This is my song,
O God of all the nations,
A song of peace,
for lands afar and mine
This is my home,
The country where my heart is;
Here are my hopes,
My dreams, my holy shrine;
But other hearts
In other lands are beating
With hopes and dreams
As true and high as mine.

My country’s skies
Are bluer than the ocean,
And sunlight beams
On cloverleaf and pine.
Both other lands
Have sunlight too, and clover,
And skies are ev’rywhere
As blue as mine.
So hear my song,
O God of all the nations,
A song of peace,
For their land and for mine.

This is my prayer,
O God of all earth’s kingdoms,
Your kingdom come;
On earth your will be done.
O God, be lifted up
Till all shall serve you,
And hearts united
Learn to live as one.
So hear my prayer,
O God of all the nations;
Myself I give you;
Let your will be done.
